SPSA Restores Funding for Part-Time Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Facilities
~ This change allows the continued operation of eight HHW facilities for area residents ~
(June 27, 2007 Chesapeake, VA) -- At its Board meeting today, SPSA amended next fiscal year’s budget (which begins July 1, 2007) to include roughly $140,000 to continue offering household hazardous waste collection at SPSA's transfer stations. This restoration of funding brings to eight the total number of facilities which will continue to be available to area residents; there are six (6) part-time facilities and two (2) full-time HHW facilities.
The Board had previously agreed that in order to cut costs, SPSA should discontinue operation of its part-time HHW facilities and only offer the HHW service through two full-time facilities located in Suffolk and Virginia Beach. That decision was amended today. As a result of this decision, HHW will be acceptable at:
· Landstown Transfer Station, 1825 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach
· Norfolk Transfer Station, 3136 Woodland Avenue
· Refuse Derived Fuel Plant, 4 Victory Blvd., Portsmouth
· Chesapeake Transfer Station, 901 Hollowell Lane
· Isle of Wight Transfer Station, 13191 Four Square Road, Smithfield
· Franklin Transfer Station, 30521 General Thomas Highway
· Regional Landfill, 1 Bob Foeller Drive, in Suffolk
· Virginia Beach Landfill, 1991 Jake Sears Road
The two full-time facilities will remain open Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The part time facilities will remain open from 9 a.m. to Noon on varied days throughout each month. Residents of the region may visit any household hazardous waste collection facility to dispose of their products. Typical items accepted through SPSA’s household hazardous waste program include paints, solvents, automotive fluids, lawn care products, gardening supplies and pool maintenance chemicals.
