CAREERS WORKSHOP EVENT TO BE HELD AT SPSA'S WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT

(CHESAPEAKE, VA, October 13, 2006) – The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) is hosting a career workshop event at its waste-to-energy plant in Portsmouth on Wednesday, October 18. The workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m. 
            The Career Fair is a project of the Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council, a coalition of businesses committed to using employee volunteers to build a stronger community and stronger workforce.  About 25 students from Children’s Resources -- Hampton Roads, ages 15 through 19, will meet with volunteers from the Council’s business members to learn more about future career opportunities.  The event will include a tour to view SPSA’s operations.
            SPSA is a member of the Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council, which is a program of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, the region’s nonprofit resource center since 1957.  Other council members include: Booz Allen Hamilton, Chubb Insurance, Cox Communications, Farm Fresh, GEICO, GVA Advantis, Hayes Seay Mattern & Mattern, KPMG, Marsh USA, Inc., NAI Harvey Lindsay, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Norfolk Southern  Corporation, Rose & Womble Realty Company, QVC, Virginia Natural Gas, VIRTEXCO Corporation, and Willcox & Savage.

        SPSA has been providing efficient and environmentally sound waste disposal services to the region and its residents since 1985. SPSA’s solid waste management system includes waste-to-energy, yard waste composting, drop-off and curbside recycling as well as other recycling programs, household hazardous waste collection, landfilling, landfill gas-to-energy and education programs. This integrated waste management system enables SPSA to put 57% of the waste it receives to a beneficial use, thus allowing the region to reduce its dependence on landfills.
