Cheran D. Cordell

Cheran Cordell Ivery began her legal career in the City of Portsmouth as an Assistant City Attorney in 2004. She has served as the Senior Deputy City Attorney since November 2015. Previously, she served as the Interim City Attorney from April 2015 to November 2015 and the Deputy City Attorney since 2011. She is also currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William & Mary. Mrs. Ivery also spent two years serving as the judicial law clerk for the Hon. Frank J. Santoro, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia.

As Sr. Deputy City Attorney, Mrs. Ivery’s focus is on civil litigation, having handled matters in both state and federal courts. She provides legal advice to numerous city departments as well as manages cases assigned to other attorneys in the office as well as outside counsel.

She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University, where she was a four-year letter winner in women’s basketball, and she earned a law degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William & Mary. Her professional affiliations include: Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association, Portsmouth Bar Association, Portsmouth General Hospital Foundation (Board Member), Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court Board of Directors. She is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

She is a proud Coast Guard wife and mother to two daughters and a son.
