Solomon H. Ashby, Jr. is the City Attorney for the City of Portsmouth. An attorney with more than twenty years of experience, Mr. Ashby has practiced law serving corporations, individuals and the cities of Portsmouth, Virginia, Atlanta, Georgia and Suffolk, Virginia. Mr. Ashby has appeared in federal and state court in Virginia, and state court in Florida, Maryland, Louisiana and Georgia.
Mr. Ashby advises clients in the area of taxation, contracts, employment, civil rights, First Amendment, public pension, products liability premises liability, torts, trucking, medical malpractice and commercial litigation. Mr. Ashby served as an Assistant City Attorney in the cities of Atlanta, Georgia and Suffolk, Virginia where he represented and advised the Police Department, Human Resource Management Department, Purchasing Department, the Real Estate Assessor, City Treasurer, Commissioner of Revenue and Finance Department.
Mr. Ashby is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Old Dominion Bar Association, South Hampton Roads Bar Association, and Local Government Attorney Association. He graduated from I. C. Norcom High School and the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science-Food Chemistry and the University of Wisconsin School of Law.
