LJ Hansen, P.E. became Virginia Beach’s Director of Public Works on April 8, 2021, and oversees the department responsible for an array of City operational and engineering services, including stormwater management/flood protection, roadway maintenance and construction, waste administration, facilities maintenance and construction, fleet administration and coastal/beach programs among other responsibilities.
Mr. Hansen has more than 20 years of experience in technical and environmental engineering, including a strong background in administration, budgets, fiscal oversight and project management.
Hansen received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Montana State University in 1993. Prior to his service in Virginia Beach, he served as the Director of Public Works for neighboring Suffolk, Virginia. Hired by Suffolk in 2007, he previously served that community in Public Works positions related to development regulation, stormwater quality, operations and was instrumental in the creation of Suffolk Transit following the City’s separation from the regional transit service provider in 2011.
Hansen is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He serves as a board member of the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) and is a contributor to numerous other boards and commissions.
