What we do take

AIR CONDITIONERS & REFRIGERATORS

Small appliances that have a certification sticker which indicates it is free of chlorinated fluorocarbons or other restricted chemicals (if applicable) are accepted at all of SPSA’s transfer stations (except Oceana) during normal operating hours.

BOATS

Boats are accepted at the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk. All liquids must be removed prior to delivery. For the disposal rate please see the current tipping fee schedule under publications and reports. Tipping Fee Schedule

CHEMICALS

Resident’s from SPSA member communities may bring household chemicals to any of our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facilities to be disposed of safely and free of charge. Hazardous waste generated commercially is not accepted at our facilities and must be disposed of using a commercial waste disposal company.

CONCRETE

Small amounts of concrete in small pieces will be accepted from citizens of SPSA member communities. In accordance with the SPSA residential waste disposal guidelines, this material can be disposed at SPSA’s transfer stations (except Norfolk and Oceana) during normal operating hours. Norfolk residents may dump at the Norfolk transfer station from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturdays and noon - 4 p.m. on Sundays only. Large loads of broken pieces of concrete can be disposed of at the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk during its normal operating hours and will be charged the applicable tipping fee.

DIABETIC NEEDLES

Household sharps (needles, lancets, insulin pens, and other sharps) generated at home through self-care can be disposed of in a sealed, rigid container (such as a detergent bottle) labeled for home use and disposed of in your regular trash.

FENCING

SPSA transfer stations accept rigid items (fencing, construction material, pipe, timber, metal stock) as long as it is no longer than six feet in length and six inches in diameter.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE & E-WASTE

SPSA operates four household hazardous waste (HHW) and E-Waste facilities. The Suffolk Regional Landfill site is open full time, Monday thru Saturday and is also the only facility that accepts scrap metal. The remaining three are open based upon a monthly recurring schedule.
Residents from all member communities may bring unwanted products to any of our established household hazardous waste  and e-waste facilities to be disposed of safely, free of charge. HHW and E-Waste must be delivered in one of the following “personal vehicles,” automobile, station wagon, van, SUV or any size personal pickup truck (that is not marked with logo of company and unmodified). Commercial HHW and E-Waste NOT accepted at any SPSA HHW and E-Waste facility.

LIMBS

SPSA transfer stations accept limbs as long as they are no longer than six feet in length and six inches in diameter. If you have limbs or stumps larger than that you must contact the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk at 757-961-3683 to discuss disposal.

SCRAP METAL

Resident's may bring scrap metal to the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk at no charge.

PAINT

Resident’s from SPSA member communities may bring paint to any of our 4 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facilities to be disposed of safely and free of charge. The Suffolk Regional Landfill site is open full time, Monday thru Saturday. The remaining three are open based upon a monthly recurring schedule. PROPANE TANKS

Resident’s from our member communities may deliver propane tanks to our HHW drop off site located at the Regional Landfill in Suffolk VA. Propane Tanks may also be delivered to any of our Household Hazardous Waste collection events held by member communities throughout the year to be disposed of safely and free of charge. SHINGLES

Shingles are accepted at SPSA transfer stations for disposal. Asbestos shingles are not accepted at any of SPSA’s transfer stations. However, residents can bring non-friable asbestos (siding and tile) as long as it is double-bagged and taped closed to the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk.

TIRES

Residents can dispose of automobile tires by bringing them to the SPSA Tire Processing Facility at the Regional Landfill at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. To dispose of tires resident's must abide by the following:
Residents can bring a maximum of four automobile tires per day. Only automobile tires will be disposed of for free. If you have more than four tires or have large tractor and off road tires, there is a fee. For disposal rates on tires please see the current tipping fee schedule under "Publication and Reports". Resident's must show a valid drivers license or a valid ID that indicates that you are a resident of the SPSA’s member communities.
Businesses wishing to dispose of tires may bring them to the SPSA Tire Processing Facility at the Regional Landfill located at 1 Bob Foeller Drive in Suffolk. Tire disposal customers will be asked to stop at the scalehouse prior to proceeding to the Tire Processing Facility. The overall weight is captured at the scalehouse and they will direct the customers to the Facility. After the tires have been off-loaded, customers will go back to the scalehouse to be weighed again and charged accordingly. BULK WASTE

SPSA does not handle the pickup of bulk waste. If you are trying to schedule the pickup of bulk waste from your residence you will need to contact the city or county in which you live. However, SPSA does accept bulk waste delivered directly to our transfer stations by citizens of our member communities with proof of residency. The first twelve (12) visits each calendar year are free to the citizen. All visits after the twelve allowed are charged directly to the citizen at the prevailing rate per ton for disposal. Certain restrictions do apply regarding the types of waste that is accepted at SPSA transfer stations. Specific questions regarding what are acceptable types of waste at SPSA transfer stations can be directed to the transfer station you intend to utilize. LOOSE YARD WASTE

Loose yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, mulch, etc. must be bagged before being dropped off at a Transfer Station. This is to keep operations running smoothly and prevent excess dust and debris from creating an unsafe environment on the tipping floor.

What we don't take

OLD MEDICINE

SPSA does not accept medications at any of its facilities. If you have medications to dispose of, contact your local police department, pharmacy or hospital. Several Suffolk and Virginia Beach police precincts have drug take-back drop off centers.

RECYCLING

SPSA does not handle recycling collection. If you are trying to setup service, report that your recycling was not collected or if you need a new recycling can you will need to contact the city or county in which you live. Each city and county is responsible for their own trash and recycling curbside collection.

NOT ACCEPTABLE WASTE

  • Appliances containing Chlorinated Fluorocarbons (CFC’s) or other restricted chemicals
  • Hazardous wastes
  • Large animal carcasses
  • Liquids
  • Slaughterhouse waste
  • Unapproved industrial process waste
  • Cable, wire, rope, etc over six feet in length
  • Rigid items over six feet in length
  • Closed drums
  • Unapproved loads of paint cans
  • Unapproved loads of drums
  • Material containing friable asbestos
  • PCB wastes
  • Regulated medical wastes
  • Ammunition

The following types of waste are unacceptable at SPSA’s Transfer Stations, but may be accepted at the Regional Landfill. Some of these items may require prior approval. Please contact the Regional Landfill at 757-961-3683 to coordinate disposal prior to your arrival:

  • Animal carcasses
  • Dust (i.e. sawdust, sanding dust)
  • Industrial process waste (i.e. ash, contaminated soil, process residue)
  • Large tree trunks and stumps
  • Heavy construction rubble (i.e. large broken concrete, solid loads of earth, sand or gravel, timbers in excess of 4×4 and/or over six feet in length, re-bar and structural steel over six feet in length)
  • Automotive tires over four per load
  • Boats
  • Camper Trailers
  • Earthmover and agricultural equipment tires
  • Loads of paint cans
  • Loads of drums
